Gilead is a town in Oxford County, Maine, United States. Upon incorporation in 1804, it was named for the large quantity of Balm of Gilead trees in the town center.
Settled in 1780, Gilead welcomes the Androscoggin River as it enters from New Hampshire. Located just north of the Maine segment of the White Mountains National Forest, it has spectacular views of the Presidential Range. Located on U.S. Route 2 as it enters the state and runs along the river, the town lies just west of Bethel.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 19.7 square miles (51.0 km2), of which, 19.1 square miles (49.4 km2) of it is land and 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2) of it (3.20%) is water.
